A Seasoned Parent and Swim Board Member’s Perspective on Champs
Through the summer swim season, our coaches and swimmers work very hard to perfect their strokes and improve their times. When champs rolls around, some of us parents have been a bit surprised to see that perhaps our own swimmer(s) competes in less than five events. But, over the years, we’ve learned how and why that happens…
We celebrate and applaud the accomplishments of each and every swimmer and wish that each and every one could be in as many events as possible. However, each team may only enter up to four (4) individuals in each individual event. In the case that all four (4) entrants from the team finish in the top 12 in prelims, the 4th place swimmer is ineligible to compete in finals. Additionally, each team is only permitted two (2) entries per relay event.
From my perspective, the coaches put together the best line up for champs. We want as many points as possible, so they create a roster aimed at getting Bryan Swim Team to the top! But they also want to include as many of our fastest swimmers as possible. Even if your swimmer does not participate in swimming at champs… PLEASE come on Sunday to help cheer the team! It is great to let your swimmer take part in the Parade of Teams and be recognized for his/her accomplishments.
Some age divisions have it “worse” than others… those age divisions with a larger number of participants are much more competitive. Some make it into five (5) events and some with be in as few as well, none. Other age divisions show a lack in depth, so … that’s why you see 9-10 or 11-12 or 13-14 year olds sometimes swimming in the 15-18 year old division. Those swimmers still get BST some MUCH needed points!
If you have questions, PLEASE come to fun night. We will have a time for the parents to hear from the coaches regarding all these matters. Feel free to talk to another seasoned swim parent or board member as well. We will try to help in any way we can.
